Independent Skills Development
In an effort to best serve the older residents in placement we offer two levels of services in the area of independent living skills.

This group is offered to all youth ages 14 and older. The group offered occurs on a rotating basis so that residents can join at any point in their placement. The entire curriculum consists of 10 groups covering a variety topics related to independent living. Prior to beginning this group the resident completes the Ansell-Casey Life Skills Assessment which provides a baseline for the individual’s areas of strengths as well as areas of needs, this assessment is completed again at the completion of the group to measure the resident’s progress. The curriculum covers a wide range of skills related to living independently such as money management, food preparation, employment and career planning, nutrition and meal preparation, self esteem and respectful relationships. Topics are presented through discussions, guest speakers and experiential activities.
Residents who complete the full 10 groups receive a certificate of completion. Efforts are underway to offer the SAIL service at our Fergus Falls campus in 2007.
In collaboration with the SHY program the St. Cloud Children’s Home is offering individual case management in the area of independent living for residents 16 and older. These services are available to residents who are 16 years of age and older, and who are expected to age out of the children’s mental health system. The goal of this program is to work with the residents on a one to one basis to “build a success plan for independent living”. The number of sessions and frequency of sessions is determined on a case to case basis. The focus of the work with the clients is based upon their individual needs and situation. Education, career planning and employment are key components of this program. Residents who will be remaining in this area are also assisted with housing, for residents moving out of this area a referral to a SHY program in their area is made to help them in this process. Eligible residents may receive financial assistance for use towards housing and household items.
