Peer Mentoring Program

Helping people with mental illness take control of their illness with the help of a friend

woman1woman2

Catholic Charities Peer Mentoring Program, in partnership with the Mental Health Consumer / Survivor Network, provides a way for an adult who is recovering from serious mental illness to mentor another who is currently in the process of recovery and who would benefit from contact with an experienced peer. The outreach center is located at 157 Roosevelt Road, Suite 300, in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Five reasons why Peer Mentoring works

  • Develops bonds and a social network based on the sharing of common experiences.
  • Moves people from a role of always being helped to helping others.
  • Stimulates specific ways of coping based on experience.
  • Develops role models.
  • Nurtures a meaningful structure which is not imposed from the outside but generated by mental health consumers themselves.

Who knows better what a person living with mental illness is going through than someone who's been there?

  • has experience as a consumer of mental health services.
  • has a positive attitude about recovery.
  • is able to demonstrate knowledge of his or her own illness to the extent that he or she can recognize and manage symptoms.

Funding

Funding is provided by the Strength Through CommUNITY Project, an adult mental health initiative in the four county area of Benton, Stearns, Sherburne, and Wright counties in Minnesota whose mission is to provide "support for persons experiencing serious mental illness problems to enhance their contributions to the community."

The Peer Mentoring Program promotes rehabilitation by assisting with relapse prevention, and by linking and accompanying people to community resources.
