Assessment Services

Catholic Charities St. Cloud Children's Home conducts comprehensive and holistic assessments of youth and their families in order to design the most appropriate individual mental health treatment recommendations.
The assessment process provides a current diagnosis and helps to determine proper medications and therapeutic interventions for the student. Recommendations are also made for future, least-restrictive interventions when the student returns to his or her home, school, and community.

A 30-day adolescent assessment is offered in Cottage Three, and a 45-day pre-adolescent assessment takes place in Cottage Six. A Final Assessment Report is completed by the Assessment Therapist with input from a team of social workers, counselors, nurses, psychologists, dietician, psychiatrist, chemical awareness counselor, recreation therapist, and youth minister.
Each student is observed and evaluated during day-to-day living, school activities, and family interactions. Standardized psycho-social instruments are used to collect data such as health needs, social development, educational needs, and psychological and personality profiles. Each student completes a series of discovery packets, addressing thoughts, feelings, and goals, and writes an autobiography. Several times a week a Primary Counselor meets with the student to discuss concerns, problems, strengths, and needs. An Assessment Therapist meets individually with the student and with the student's family, since family dynamics and community functioning contribute to the student's progress toward a positive outcome.
